JAY ROBINSON INTERVIEW: Confidence the key to success

This week I had the chance to interview young striker Jay Robinson, one of the most exciting prospects coming through the Saints academy.

He is only 15 years old and has scored both for Saints B and the England U16s national team this season. He has also appeared four times for the U18s side.

He made his debut for Southampton’s B side on December 2nd, starting against Colchester U21s, playing 82 minutes and scoring a very classy right-footed goal. The young Saints side won 7-1.

On December 6th Robinson announced he had been called-up to the England U16s squad for two international fixtures against Turkey U16s at St George’s Park. On Tuesday, December 20th (first game, 3-0 England win) he came off the bench and played 35 minutes. On Thursday he started the game and also scored as England beat Turkey 4-0. He was the only Southampton player to feature in these two matches.

With this series of questions and answers you will understand what the current season has been like for Jay and what his secret mentality is.

SFC Blog: "At 15 years old you made your U21 debut and also scored in that game. You also got called-up to the England U16s squad earlier this month, appearing twice and also scoring in your second game. How did you feel when you scored those two goals and how glad were you to get on the scoresheet of your national team?"

JR: “When I scored for the [Saints] B team and also England it was quite a surreal moment and it didn’t feel like it was actually happening. It wasn’t until after both games that it actually sank in and [these] were really proud moments for me and my family.”

SFC Blog: "If you could describe your 2022 in only one word, what would it be?"

JR: “I think this year has been a very positive year where I have learnt a lot and gained a lot more experience with all the opportunities that I’ve been given.”

SFC Blog: "You’ve had an amazing season up to now, Jay. What is your secret?" JR: “I think confidence is a big thing, making sure you’re being brave and taking risks.”

SFC Blog: "What are you most looking forward to for next year?" JR: “Next year I want to carry on this good form, try to learn as much as possible, taking every opportunity as it comes and trying to push on as much as I can.”

Thank you for your time, Jay. Best of luck for the remainder of the season.

Hope you enjoyed reading this short interview. Your support - as always - means a lot.
