It is my understanding that Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Kyle Gabbidon is currently on trial at Southampton. He is highly rated in Ireland and is now attracting interest from European clubs.
The 16-year-old has been tracked by Southampton for some time, and the club will evaluate whether to sign him at the end of the trial period. English clubs, however, are not able to sign players from overseas until they turn 18, a rule introduced after Brexit.
Having been called up to Sligo’s matchday squad on numerous occasions - often alongside his brother Aiden - he finally made his debut for the club in a friendly match against Everton earlier this summer. The game ended in a 3-3 draw, with Kyle coming on in the 70th minute and impressing with a superb save.
Gabbidon was born in the United States to a Jamaican-American father and an Irish mother. He moved to Ireland with his family at the age of five, making him eligible to represent three different countries.
Hopefully, Southampton can secure another talented player in Kyle, following the signings of Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh and Romeo Akachukwu, both of whom also came from the League of Ireland this year.
