SAINTS' GREATEST STRIKERS

Peter Osgood - UEFA Cup Winners' Cup top scorer (1972)

The English striker played 4 seasons at Southampton, making 161 appearances and scoring 36 goals. He joined from Chelsea for a record fee of £275,000 in March 1974. He played in the FA Cup Final in 1976 against Manchester United, when Saints won the first ever FA Cup Trophy of their history. In 1977 he left Southampton and joined ex-soccer team based in North America “Philadelphia Fury”. After a brief spell back with his old club Chelsea he retire in December 1979. Twenty-four years later, he sadly passed away.


Mick Channon – FA Cup Winner (1976)

The loyal England National Team striker spent 15 seasons at Southampton, making 607 appearances and scoring 227 goals. Even though Saints got relegated to the Second Division in 1974, Channon stayed loyal to the club, and got noticeably rewarded in 1976, when he helped Southampton win their first and only FA Cup. In 1977 he joined Manchester City for a fee of £300,000, but two years later he decided to rejoin Saints. In 1982, he was sold to Bristol Rovers, and in 1986 he announced his retirement from football, finding a new career in horse racing.


Steve Moran – PFA Young Player of the Year (1982)

The English striker spent 7 seasons at Southampton, making 180 appearances and scoring 78 goals. An important match he played in was Pompey 0-1 Saints (1986), when he scored the heroic match winner in stoppage time, thanks to Mark Dennis’ throw-in. He was one of Southampton’s finest strikers in their history. He left Southampton in 1986 and joined Leicester City for a fee of £300,000. In 1995 he announced his retirement from football.


Marians Pahars – Latvian Footballer of the Year (1999, 2000, 2001)

The Latvian National Team striker played 7 great seasons at Southampton, making 145 appearances and scoring 43 goals. He joined from ex-football team based in Latvia “Skonto FC” for a fee of £800,000. He became the first Latvian footballer to play in the Premier League. He played in the famous match “Saints 3-2 Arsenal”, the last match played at The Dell, where he gave an excellent performance in attack, helping Saints win the historic game. He left Southampton in April 2006, after his final game, saying goodbye to all the players and fans in a “lap of appreciation”. He joined Cypriot football club Anorthosis Famagusta, and three years later he announced his retirement from football.
