SAINTS' GREATEST MIDFIELDERS

Anders Svensson – FA Cup Runner-up (2003)

The Swedish National Team midfielder played at Southampton for 4 seasons, making 138 appearances and scoring 12 goals for the club. He joined Saints from Elfsborg for a fee of £750,000. A very important game where he marked his appearance with a commanding display, was also one of Saints’ greatest games: Saints 4-0 Tottenham. He came on as a substitute, scoring the third goal of the game, an excellent solo effort that left the goalkeeper surprised. He left Southampton in 2005 to rejoin his former club Elfsborg, until 2015 when he decided to retire.

Chris Marsden – FA Cup Runner-up (2003)

The English midfielder stayed at Southampton for 5 seasons, making 142 appearances and scoring 7 goals for the club. He played in the famous match “Saints 2-1 Watford”, where he assisted the first goal of the game, two minutes before half-time. Saints managed to win the semi-final and go to Wembley for the final against Arsenal. Chris Marsden left the club two years later to join Busan IPark.

Glenn Cockerill – Full Members Cup Finalist (1992)

The loyal English midfielder spent 8 amazing seasons at Southampton, making 287 appearances and scoring 32 goals for them. He made an astonishing performance in Saints’ 1-0 victory against Manchester United in 1986, scoring the winner. He left Southampton in 1993 to join Leyton Orient. An interesting fact about him was that he played more than 700 Football League games in a 22-year career.

Jimmy Case – Southampton FC Player of the Season (1989)

The English midfielder spent 6 seasons playing for Southampton, making a total of 216 appearances and scoring 10 goals. He is known for having one of the hardest shots in the British game. Case gave an amazing performance playing against his former club Liverpool in 1989, the game Saints won by 4 goals to 1. Jimmy Case controlled the midfield area well in that game, and when he got interviewed at the end of the match, he described it as “the best win of his Southampton career”. The player left two years later joining Bournemouth.
