SAINTS' GREATEST GOALKEEPERS BIO

Peter Shilton OBE – Record for most caps earned playing for England National Team (125) and all-time record for most competitive appearances in the world of football (1,390) The English goalkeeper is considered one of the top 10 goalkeepers of the 20th Century. A well as playing for Southampton and England, Shilton had played for many other teams including Leicester City, Stoke City, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United. During his time at the club (1982-1987) he was involved in 188 appearances, some of which were played with his former international teammates Kevin Keegan and Alan Ball. At Southampton, he suffered an FA Cup semi-final defeat against Everton.

Antti Niemi – Finnish Footballer of the Year award (2004)

The Finnish goalkeeper has won a total of three awards during his football career. He has played four brilliant seasons at Southampton FC, and that’s why the club remembers him as one of the greatest goalkeepers that ever played for the Saints. He has made a total of 108 appearances for Southampton, including the FA Cup final loss against Arsenal, when he became the first keeper to be substituted in an FA Cup final. After the terrible relegation from the Premiership, Niemi decided to depart the club and join Fulham.

Tim Flowers – Winner of two consecutive FA Premier League PFA Team of the Year

The English goalkeeper, who also got called up to play in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, is one of the best Southampton goalkeepers of all time. He spent seven seasons at Southampton, and won the Southampton Player of the Season award for two seasons in a row. He made 192 appearances for the Saints (the most appearances he has made for any club) and since his arrival, he soon became Southampton’s first choice goalkeeper, after Peter Shilton joined Derby County. On 4th November 1993, his £2,4 million move to Blackburn Rovers, made him the most expensive goalkeeper at the time, in the whole of Britain.

Fraser Forster – PFA Scotland Scottish Premiership Team of the Year (2013-14)

The English goalkeeper has played six seasons now at Southampton (including a short-loan at Celtic during the 2019-20 season). He has made 125 appearances for the Saints (the most appearances he’s made for any club). A few weeks later he arrived at Southampton, he managed to achieve the best defensive record of the Premier League (4 clean sheets and 5 goals conceded in two months). The best performance he made so far for Southampton was during the Liverpool match he played at Anfield in 2017, where he saved a penalty and managed to save a terrific shot “putting it” over the crossbar. He got called up to play in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and in the Euro 2016.
