Bundesliga close to resuming... but the Premier League?

The date was officially confirmed: Bundesliga is returning on 16th of May. But the Premier League? When is it going to return?

Most football players (including Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and, of course, Bundesliga players) have been tested and only a few of them have resulted positive. At the moment, only La Liga and Bundesliga players have returned to training (keeping a safe distance from each other), while Premier League and Serie A players are still training individually at home, with a possible return date to “collective” training (in small groups) scheduled for 12th May. There were rumors which said that the Premier League could finish the season playing the remaining matches in China, given the fact that they have nearly beaten the virus, or in Australia (this country has encountered very few cases of Covid-19). But the Premier League has already figured out a new possible way of completing the remaining fixtures of the season: playing the last 9 matchdays (10 for 4 clubs) at neutral venues.

Possible return dates have been set by the Government of each country (Germany, Italy, UK, Spain) and are the following:

- Bundesliga : 16th of May;

- Serie A : 2nd of June;

- Premier League: 8th of June;

- La Liga : 20th June.

OPINIONS (regarding the Premier League season):

I personally think that there are five solutions to finish the season:

1. Hybrid Solution (the best solution for me): Liverpool are crowned Champions of England, but the three teams in the relegation zone (Norwich City, Aston Villa and Bournemouth) are not relegated. The EFL Championship’s top two teams in the automatic promotion zone (Leeds United and West Brom) are promoted to the Premier League, which means that the overall number of teams in the First Division has increased to 22. The Championship can be canceled for one season and the Premier League can play 42 matchdays in the 2020-21 season, relegating the last five teams in the final ranking at the end of the season, so the number of teams would go back to normal (20). The next seasons, from 2021-22 onwards, will be played again normally.

2. Playing the last matches of the season (very good if done carefully): The remaining fixtures are played, and the season finishes as normal.

3. Champions with no relegations (good): Liverpool are crowned Champions and there are no teams relegated.

4. Champions and relegations (fair): Liverpool are crowned Champions and the three teams in the relegation zone (Norwich City, Aston Villa and Bournemouth) are relegated to the EFL Championship.

5. Cancelling the season (unfair): no winners, no relegations, no promotions. After 30 years from their last title and a 25-point lead from 2nd place, Liverpool does not win the Premier League title. Norwich City, Aston Villa and neither Bournemouth get relegated, giving the teams another chance to impress their fans next season.

That’s all for today Saints FC fans, hope you liked this post (was a little different than normal)! Stay safe!
